A little introduction to the OptiFlow Canister Vacuum story: we have a 2009 Panasonic canister which we really like, but it had a few problems: no separate bare floor attachment, no stair cleaning attachment, and awkward storage because it was two separate pieces. Carrying the canister and the attachment up and down the stairs to use it has gotten old (just like me). I was really hoping Panasonic had addressed "my" problems with its previous model, and it appears that they have.
When we got the Panasonic 'OptiFlow" Canister Vacuum Cleaner today, I had my husband drop in in the mudroom so I could unpack it and put it together myself. I'm middle-aged, smallish, and nobody's idea of "handy". Everything was well packed and easily accessible. Parts included the hose with the handle attachment, the telescoping wand (attaches to the handle), the wind turbine attachment (little stair cleaner) and its case, the carpet attachment and the canister vacuum itself (along with the... It excels in the areas that are most important in a vacuum - it picks up dirt very well and it is solidly built.
I find the second factor (build quality) to be something that's becoming harder to find these days. For example, I had a Hoover bagless canister that performed very well, but lasted less than 3 years before calling it quits. Along the way it started shedding pieces, such as a cracked hose, an on-again, off-again working status for the power head, and so forth. The Panasonic, however, feels very substantial, especially the hose. I know you're not supposed to pull it along by the hose connection, but I do (and I suspect that many others do as well). The hose is made of thick plastic and the end connectors seem very well up to the task of being stressed now and again.
This is my second Panasonic vac - the other one is about 2 or 3 years old and works (and looks) as good as it did on day one (albeit some scuffing... Read more

In our house, we have a mix of hardwood floors and area rugs, one very sheddy dog, and a teenage boy. I'm immediately thrilled with how well it works and how easy it is to use.
Pros:
1. Good suction on a variety of surfaces
2. Easy on-handle switch for power-floors-carpet
3. Easy foot-release from beater attachment to have just the hose
4. Most of the attachments store in the unit itself
5. There is an awesome upholstery brush, which cleverly rotates from the suction and is very effective (e.g., when I vacuum the dog bed)
6. It's not too heavy
7. The cord retracts with a foot-control button
Cons:
1. Not much, really, but it's a little large
I have used a number of vacuum cleaners in the past couple of years and this is my favorite of the bunch.
